- Deadwood‘s brick architecture exists because of two fires. A fire in 1879 took over most of the city’s downtown. The same thing happened in 1894, forcing another rebuild.

- Custer State Park‘s bison herd grew from 36 to more than 1,300. The herd started with 36 rescued animals in 1914.
- The movie Dances with Wolves used three separate locations in South Dakota for filming. The locations are Spearfish Canyon, Badlands National Park, and a ranch near Fort Pierre.
- Homestake Mine was the largest, deepest gold mine in the Western Hemisphere. Before it closed in 2002, the mine reached more than 8,000 feet below the surface. It produced more than 40 million troy ounces of gold.
- Crazy Horse Memorial has taken zero federal dollars since 1948. Private donations have funded the entire monument.
- The 1880 Train doesn’t actually run on 1880s track. The rail line it uses was built in 1890.
