Dive into History: Crazy Horse Memorial

Beyond the obvious historical significance of Mount Rushmore, the Black Hills are home to a fascinating Native American history. To learn about the area’s indigenous people and their struggle, visit the Crazy Horse Memorial. The Crazy Horse Memorial is the world’s largest sculpture in progress. When it’s all said and done, the Crazy Horse Memorial will stand at over 500 feet tall. The project began in 1948 when Chief Henry Standing Bear invited sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to carve a mountain to honor the heritage, tradition, and culture of North American Indians.

In the visitor center, visitors will find the Indian Museum of North America, the Native American Cultural Center, the sculptor’s studio home and workshop, a 40,000 square foot Orientation Center, and two theaters. If you’re looking for black hills activities that will shed light on our nation’s past, head to the Crazy Horse Memorial.
