A man hiking trails in Keystone, SD.

South Dakota is known for its expansive scenery and beautiful horizons. There’s no doubt that you will want to explore at least a portion of the land here. Rushmore Express is a great place to call your home base to take on the many Keystone hiking trails. We have more than a few suggestions to help you get started. Pack your bags and tie your boots. These are our favorite Keystone hiking trails.

Presidential Trail Loop

This is an obvious trail to visit. It’s near the Rushmore Express, and it will give you a glimpse of Mount Rushmore. Because it’s close to Mount Rushmore, it will be heavily trafficked, but it’s only one mile long.

Horsethief Lake Trail

The Horsethief Lake Trail is another popular trail near Keystone. You’ll be able to walk along a creek, see incredible rock formations, and the thick forest growth. It’s just a little more than five miles long and an easy trail for most people to walk.

Grizzly Creek

Here is a longer trail. The Grizzly Creek trail is more than 12 miles long. On this trail, you will see a lot of nature with vast stretches of trees and flowers. It’s a great way to experience nature without navigating a lot of traffic.

Stratobowl Rim Trail

Stratobowl Rim Trail is a little less than two miles long. Along this trail, you will see an assortment of beautiful flowers. It’s a short hiking trail but one that is worth the view.

Flume Trail Loop

This four-mile-long trail will take you through almost everything South Dakota’s nature has to show you. On this loop, you will see rock formations, dense forests, and a lake. This trail is a must-see if you only have time for one.

The Lost Trails

The Lost Trails, specifically the Lower Loop, will take you around Center Lake. The loop is a little longer than one-and-a-half miles. It’s the best way to view a picturesque South Dakota lake.
