Bighorn Sheep can be seen grazing during the day. They are one of the Badlands wildlife you could see.

There is a lot of wilderness to explore in South Dakota. We’ve gone over it before in a previous blog about hiking and state parks near the Rushmore Express. But this time, we want to focus on what types of wildlife you will probably see when you are on a hike or simply driving around the Black Hills and Badlands

9 Animals You Will See in South Dakota While Hiking

Bring your camera, and remember to stay safe when you are out in the wild. It’s a special place so be respectful and enjoy yourself too. Here is some wildlife that you can find in the Black Hills and the Badlands.

  • The Mountain Goat is a unique animal to see in South Dakota. It’s not a native creature to this area. However, they are found near the Rocky Mountains and throughout South Dakota.
  • Bighorn Sheep can be seen grazing during the day. You might notice that the male sheep will stay in one group while the female sheep stick together in another group.
  • Wild Turkey will be easy to spot due to their identifiable waddle when they walk. You should be able to find them wandering around in herds too.
  • This will be a rare one to see. Mountain Lions are nocturnal. But, if you do come in contact with one close by, do not run away because they will chase you.
  • It’s hard to miss seeing a Bison. These creatures are enormous. You will probably end up seeing them grazing during the day.
  • You might have a hard time seeing this one. The Black-footed Ferret is most active at night. But if you spot one at night, you’ll know by its bright green eyes.
  • Take a few photos if you are lucky enough to find a Prairie Dog colony. These little furry creatures are a mainstay in the plains region of the United States.
  • The Pronghorn is a close relative to the Antelope, and you’ll be able to see why immediately. Their distinctive antlers stand out as well as their graceful movements.
  • If you are near a Prairie Rattlesnake, you’ll usually hear it before you see it. Don’t get too close to these snakes because their bites are venomous.
